understanding virtual memory

Game I am trying to play gives message:

need 3MB to play this game

I have 1.00G of RAM
hard drive is 80G
in virtual memory window it shows 1563MB

What am I not understanding about the inability of my PC to play this game?

Your post left out crucial information. The name of the game.

Memory in general is noted the the Memory Article at

A great consternation for some is that some applications didn't run on 1.0 G of RAM! CodeWarrior for years had a bug that required us to downsize the machine to 512M of RAM! Without the name of the game, no one can tell if the game should run on XP or has this bug.

Name of the game is Traitors Gate and I had installed it some time ago but never finished the game. Have saved games so know I did play it for awhile. I used to have 512M ram but now have the 1G of RAM so perhaps that is the reason it will not run now. This means I have to downsize my PC? Thanks for the site you included in your response.
