undeletable desktop icons

by trlarse / March 29, 2004 9:10 AM PST

I have a few dead icons on my windows XP desktop which I can't delete. The link doesn't exist anymore... I recreated the link however it still doesn't allow me to delete the icon. Is there an INI file or someplace in the registry I can remove these desktop icons manually? Tweek UI doesn't work either!

Safemode will not allow me to delete the icons either... I have tried almost everything... Where do I physically remove the desktop icon???? It is either in the registry or in an INI file somewhere...? Can anyone help?

1. The article [Q320081] explains why you may not be able to delete a file or a folder on an NTFS file system volume and how to address the different causes to resolve this issue.

2. Otherwise, please read Doug Knox's tip, "How do I delete an "undeletable" file?."

trlarse, Open Windows Explorer and look in C:\Documents & Settings\Owner\Desktop and see it those icons are there. If they are right click them and choose Delete. You may also want to check C:\Documents & Settings\All Users\Desktop and C:\Documents & Settings\Default Users\Desktop.

If the above doesn't work try dragging & dropping them into the Recycle Bin and see if you can empty the Recycle Bin. Another thing to try is to right click your Desktop, choose new and create a new folder, give it any name then try dragging & dropping those icons into it and then right click the folder and choose Delete.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
