Unable to Watch a DVD

Jul 5, 2007 3:54AM PDT

My computer is running Windows XP home edition. I tried to watch a DVD on my computer yesterday and I got an error message saying that I couldn't watch it because my screen resolution is set to high. I went into lower it and found that it was already set to the lowest setting. I am wondering if somebody could tell me what the problem is, or could recommend a program {hopefully freeware} that would let me watch a DVD. If that will help you, I have Windows media player 11 and Nero Essentials 7.

Hi Kelray -- You do need to install somesort of DVD Decoder to be able to watch DVD's.

which decoder do I need?

From one I can find there are three versions of decoders available. They all will cost him a about $15. One is 8 MB and the other two are about 170 kB. I don't mind spending the money to get one, I just don't want to spend the money and get one that won't work for me. The links to the ones that I've found are:

CinePlayer DVD Decoder for Windows XP
http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=6485142

Cyberlink PowerDVD SE for Windows XP
http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=6485145

DVD XPack for Windows XP
http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=6485143

if anybody could help me find the correct one I would really appreciate it. If they have other ideas I would like to see them also.

All 3 are "correct".

I've seen all 3 and all 3 work and play DVDs. So you picked all good ones.

Didn't VLC PLAYER play it? (and for free?)

how does it work
Jul 7, 2007 12:23AM PDT

I played with the program for about an hour and couldn't figure out how to get it to work. If you can send me where I could get directions on how to use it that would be great. Have a good weekend.

Just two questions.

1. What exactly is that lowest resolution?
2. What program do you use to play the DVD?
