Question

Unable to update from 10.4.11 to 10.6

Oct 28, 2011 1:24PM PDT

Hello all you fine people. So I have a Macbook w Intel Core Duo processor.

The dvd for the Macbook is unable to read dvds, so I've hookedup up an external DVD drive. I put the Snow Leopard 10.6 cd in and it pulls right up. I click the option to Install and it prompts me to restart to begin the installation process.

I click Restart and when the Mac begins to boot up it then won't start the installation. The external dvd just spins a little and makes some noise and on the screen it shows a cirle with a line through it, then it will show a file folder with a question mark, but nothing more.

Does anyone have any ideas of what I can do to get my OS X updated? FYI - the Snow Leopard dvd I just received from Apple.com for $29.

Thanks!

Answer
You cannot directly upgrade from OSX10.4.x to OSX10.6.x

You need the intermediate upgrade from OS X 10.4.11 to OS X 10.5 (Leopard) before you can upgrade to OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard).

Sure you can

Sure you can, plenty of people have done it. However it seems to be pretty hit or miss as to whether or not it works.

Answer
Try

Try rebooting the system while holding down the Option key on the keyboard. After a couple of seconds you should see the mouse cursor show up. Wait a little bit longer, and you should see the 10.6 DVD show up. Now double click on that and see if the installer launches.

Jimmy - almost but no cigar

I held the Option key during reboot and it did in fact then pull up the Install option during bootup. I double clicked the Install and then it just gave me the circle with the line through it again and the folder with the question mark. Any other helpful hints? Thanks Jimmy!
