Question

Unable to uninstall Office 2003 in order to upgrade to 2010

May 15, 2011 5:22AM PDT

Please help, I am trying to uninstall Office 2003 in order to update to Office 2010.

I tried installing Microsoft Office 2010 and before installation started I received the error message "An office 2003 installation on your computer is corrupted and setup cannot continue. Remove or repair the Office 2003 product and re-run set-up"

I tried uninstalling office 2003 from "add/remove programs" but received another error message "fatal error during installation" I also tried using Revo uninstaller but received yet another error message "This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package"

Please help with this issue, so many error messages!

I am running Windows XP Professional on an AcerPower S285

While I would use the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility some had issues with it so I'll note that I use it and leave it to you to research what this is and decide if you can use it.

In cases like this I try first reinstall, then uninstall from the Office 2003 CD.

No disc

Unfortunately I no longer have this disc around. I also tried using Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility but could not install it. Another error "installation ended prematurely because of an error"

That's unfortunate indeed.

Your options are rather limited now, I think.
1. A clean reinstall of the OS, back to factory conditions. You have that disks around, I hope? This gets rid of everything, including Office 2003. Then install Office 2010.
2. Don't install Office 2010, but keep using Office 2003 or Open Office.

Partially solved.

I was able to figure out why microsoft installer was not working. The service for it was turned off. After turning it back on i was able to install programs to help with the situation. For now, problem solved. I was trying to install an update to Hotmail Outlook connector and I can now do this. I will try updating to Office 2010 at another time. Thanks for the help!

That's good news BUT

Did you find out who or what turned that off?

Not sure

I have no idea really or how long it has been like that. I ran a full virus scan and did uncover and delete some problems. Hopefully that solves any other issues that may occur.

For me that explains it.

Unless those problems were only cookies I would take it that the source of the trouble was found.
