Unable to sync to my new X51v!

I just purchased a new X51v PDA. However, I have not been successful syncing to my Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 from home via VPN. Is there a way for me to sync with my company's network at home via VPN, or am I going to be restricted to syncing only when my laptop is docked at work ? My laptop has Windows 2000 installed.
