unable to shut down/restart

by hikergirl / November 28, 2009 2:48 AM PST

I'm running MS XP Pro, Avast! Home Edition, SAS
Since yesterday, I have not been able to shut down. I've tried restarting, logging off: neither work
I have checked Belarc Advisor to find out if Avast! is still running & it is and in real time; same for SAS - even did a full scan thinking I might have picked up something, being as I am not able to turn the computer off.
I have lost the icons for Avast! and a local TV station
I'm no longer able to use the FoxyTunes that I had set up & the genre I chose is not part of any list.

Someone please help! Please keep the language simple and straight-forward. I get done what I need to do but am not fully literate in computers, so please be kind:)

Try restarting by holding the power button in until the system turns off, then power back up and see if the buttons work then?

Thank you. I finally remembered to do this, and all my icons in bottom right returned.
However, that did not correct the underlying problem.
It took SAS Pro 2 days to notify me of the presence of Adware.CouponBar, which I had quarantined and removed (it was titled cpnprt2.cid)
It was a coupon printing software from Pillsbury/Nestle, et al. that caused the problem. I have notified them in no uncertain terms.
Thank you for your response/answer.
