Unable to set background on desktop

Hp a330n XP w\SP2. This my dads machine. He is unable to set his background. Can't right click and wallpaper. His background options are a subdued color and are unresponsive. He's dealing with a constant blue background. I think he got a virus but would like to ask you all out there if there is a fix for this.

Hijakk This! And Spybot Search and Destroy.

In reply to: Unable to set background on desktop

Install Spybot Search and Destroy on that machine. Reboot the computer in Safe Mode without Networking and let Spybot do its thing. Remove everything it finds.

Also, Run HiJakk This! And save the log. Find a forum with security experts and post that log to them. Never ever remove stuff from a Hijakk log without the qualified advice of a security expert or you may ruin the machine even more!

this problem is usually caused by a spyware infection

is there a message in the middle telling you not to use your computer until the spyware threat is gone ??

first you need to get rid of the spyware
run your anti spyware software if you have.

or download free ad-aware here

http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail.php3?fid=965718306

or download Spybot Search & Destroy for free here

http://www.safer-networking.org/

or go to http://www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan/

delete anything they find and reboot check to see if your options are back if they are then your done if there still not there

Go here: download this registry fix from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/reg/smitfraud.reg
Double-click smitfraud.reg on your desktop. When asked if you want to merge with the registry click YES.

reboot everything should be back to normal

i used this reg fix myself and it sorted the problem it was also scanned with kaspersky internet security 6.0
