Unable to set 1080p res on LN46A650 with laptop using VGA

Jan 29, 2009 8:27AM PST

Hi I bought the LN46A650 last week and connected my IBM W500 Laptop running Win XP SP2 using the VGA cable. I get a picture but the highest resolution I can get is 1280 x 1024. When I set the desktop resolution to 1920 x 1080 @ 60 Hz, I get a message on TV saying "Mode not Supported".

I tried a few resolutions in between like 1400 x 1200 but these did not work either.

What am I doing wrong?

Any help appreciated.

VGA

nagtaget,

The manual notes on page 44 that the only way to get the resolution you're outputting is to use DVI/HDMI. Unfortunately, the available resolutions through a VGA cable are:

640 x 480
640 x 480
640 x 480
800 x 600
800 x 600
800 x 600
1024 x 768
1024 x 768
1024 x 768
1280 x 1024
1280 x 1024
1360 x 768

Hope that helps.

Unable to set 1080p res on LN46A650 with laptop using VGA

Hi HDTech,

Thank you very much for the explanation. That makes sense. I went through the manual and you are right it says for VESA standard, the highest resolution is 1360 x 768. However, it also mentions that for the CVT standard, the only resolution is 1920 x 1080RB. Now based on my research, I believe, VESA and CVT are display standards for the laptops display driver? Am I correct? Do you know how I can change the display mode from VESA to CVT?

I ask because, even for DVI/HDMI input, there are two modes, VESA and CAE and the 1920 x 1080 resolution can only be achieved by CAE. Does this mean that even with the DVI/HDMI cable, my laptop will only be able to output VESA mode graphics and be limited to 1360 x 768?

Thanks

1080p through VGA cable on 650
Feb 22, 2009 4:15AM PST

Samsung_HD_TECH,

I had a problem similar to this post. Just to let other readers know, I created a custom resolution on my video card control panel on my PC:
>>> 1920x1080RB 60hz "CVT Reduced Blanking" <<<
RB apparently stands for "reduced blanking" and I chose this specific setting.

This resolution does work via VGA cable with the Samsumg 650.

Thank you, Samsung_HD_TECH, for your helpful advice. Leading me to page 44 in the manual set me on the right course.
