unable to reload windows xp

am having hp dv 2124 laptop with windows media centre edition..my dvd rom is not working..am trying to reload windows xp using usb dvd rom..
whnever i insert bootable xp cd..my system doesnt boot from cd instead system starts normally in xp which is already installed..and whn i tried to install xp through set up it doesnt aceept the key..plz help me..

Definately a Problem w/ Laptops Since They....

usually only have ONE such device (Being Media center, I assume you meant DVD R/RW since MC without ability to burn media makes little sense). In a desktop, not difficult for home user to replace (just unplug old & plug-in new BUT in a Laptop I would suggest a pro ,used to laptops, do it. I believe you will have to at some point anyway.Sympathies! JMHO. Happy

I'd replace the failing drive.

That's cheaper than XP or a trip to the service counter. I use models from newegg.com or geeks.com
