Unable to Open Word 2000 in ME

by dave77 / April 21, 2004 8:41 PM PDT

My computer is suddenly unable to open Microsoft Word 2000. I'm running Windows ME on a Toshiba Satellite laptop and haven't had any problems before. When i try to open Word, the login timer comes on screen but nothing else happens. After pressing clt+alt+delete i get a message telling me that the system is dangerously low on resources. i've tried a few things to fix this including closing down other programs, running a Norton 2004 virus check, reinstalling Word and using System Restore but nothing has worked. There are no problems opening up any other programs though.

What could be the problem?

Thanks.

Find and delete all occurences of normal.dot (can be done in Windows Explorer). Success virtually guaranteed.

I'm not an expert, but try right clicking My Computer, then hit the Performance tab. It will show you the % of available resources. If you have many icons on the lower right hand side of your Desktop taskbar, for example, those programs ARE IN FACT RUNNING, and you may need to clean those up---by removing them. Adware junk may be in there, for example. Keep any "shortcut" icons on the lower LEFT hand side. Good luck.

you are right. When the problem is specifically in Word, however, it's a corrupted normal.dot, which has to be removed.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
