General discussion

Unable to modify file attributes.

Jun 14, 2010 11:24AM PDT

Hi all. I am running a HP Pavillion dv9700 on Windows Vista Home Premium. My problem lies with one of my folders, where I need to install a patch. The folder is read-only and it seems like a quick fix. I uncheck the box, click apply, and then I am assaulted with many boxes saying I need administrative access to continue (which I am the administrator). I click continue a couple of times, wait for a loading screen, and then it seemingly looks like it worked. I try to install the patch but it's as if nothing happened. So I reopen the properties for the folder again and the read-only box is still checked. No matter how many times I try to change the attribute it never unchecks. I appreciate the help.

You didn't reveal the folder names. They could be "protected." Beyond that, you can always turn off UAC but let's get more detail first.

One member was forcing the install of an incompatible CD recording software and by forcing it broke the OS.

I figured it out, I just didn't give the patch proper permissions. Thanks.
