Unable to install Norton

by timkroll421 / September 4, 2008 5:11 AM PDT

I need help. I am trying to install AT&T's Norton antivirus. It will not install because it keeps seeing McAfee Security Suite 2005. I have uninstalled McAfee and deleted the entries from the registry and it still will not load. HELP! I am getting very frustrated with this.

Still unable to install norton
by timkroll421 / September 6, 2008 5:23 AM PDT

Hi Grif-
I followed your steps to a T and I still get an error "AT&T Yahoo! Online Protection with Norton? Security Online not available until you uninstall McAfee Internet Security Suite 2005"

One note, when I searched for McAfee it brought up 2 folders "McAfeeAntiVirus" & "McAfeeFirewall". I deleted them, but they keep reappearing. They will not permanently delete. There wer also 3 or for other files called DeviceDesc and it will not let me delete them.

Any help would be appreciated.
Tim

Just about that reappearing.

Be sure system restore is disabled when you delete them.

Also, post your HIJACKTHIS log for us to see if there are remnants there.

Then You Still Haven't Removed All Things McAfee
by Grif Thomas Forum moderator / September 6, 2008 9:05 AM PDT

Use the Registry Search link I provided and remove all entries for McAfee, Network Associates, etc.. As Bop mentioned, you may need to temporarily disable System Restore to get rid of those items you find on a search.. (They're probably in the System Restore volumes) Plus the Norton installer is looking at your registry.. Any remaining McAfee listings will cause it to be reported.

I've had similar discussions with former McAfee users.. It frequently takes a lot of digging to remove it all.

Keep hunting..

Hope this helps.

I See Nothing McAfee In The Log... But...
by Grif Thomas Forum moderator / September 10, 2008 2:23 PM PDT

...that doesn't mean there isn't a registry entry somewhere which doesn't show up in the HJT log because it's no actually starting a process.. It could still be stopping the Norton installation but not showing up in HJT because it doesn't post a hazard..

At this point, you need to talk to Norton.. It's THEIR product which isn't installing because of something hidden.. Have them tell you which items the Norton program looks for.

Hope this helps.

McAfee Site-Advisor was difficult to remove, too.
by michhala / September 6, 2008 9:30 AM PDT

Hi Tim -- McAfee S.A. was also a pain to remove. I used the McAfee removal tool, manual search, Registry Find and went over everything twice..... and finally was successful.

Hang in there....it's worth it! I have always had good luck with Norton in the past and am very pleased with my current NIS 2008.

The Samsung RF23M8090SG

One of the best French door fridges we've tested

A good-looking fridge with useful features like an auto-filling water pitcher and a temperature-adjustable "FlexZone" drawer. It was a near-flawless performer in our cooling tests.
