Resolved Question

Unable to get WU KB982670

Sep 15, 2011 12:23AM PDT

Dell Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E7500 Computer Inspirion 545s 00 Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit 6GB Memory 750GB Hard Drive

I tried twice to downloan the latest WU KB982670 this morning and am unable to do so. It shows failed in the log. Here's what comes up --
WIndows Update Error 800B0100.

I downloaded the "System Readiness Tool" from MS, but am almost afraid to run it. The last time I had a failed update and got one of MS' tools, and ran it, it wiped out the system restore feature on my computer. Oh, I can still do an SR; however, only way to accomplish it is to go into Safe Mode to do so.

I sure hate to do this again and have it wipe something else out. The updates have been really good at wiping out the SEARCH feature that is built into Windows 7. Granted, it does rebuild after 2-3 weeks. I'm not sure which update it is that messes things up, but it's not fun. I finally downloaded Everywhere search and it's better than the Windows7 Search feature anyway (sour grapes).

I often feel that the only viable virus out there is MS anyway, so even though I love their product, I'm not that fond of MS as a whole.

Do you suggest I run that rool and take my changes, or will a future update "fix" the situation?

Thanks,

Julea

Only if I get bored (LOL)

Thanks for the heavy reading. I do remember some time ago checking out the NET Framework business and found I didn't need it. IF I used GIMP (I think that's the one) or some of those other programs that require it, I'd be more inclined to get it, but I use only PSP and am trying to learn Image Ready (part of Photoshop), and they don't require it. I'm embarrasses to tell you, but I will -- if I'd looked at the title of the update rather than the KB # only, I'd have known better (sigh)!

Thanks again for everything -- you all are the bestest!!

Answer
You know that is common with NORTON

I hear another antivirus is now messing with System Restore today. But Norton for years has us using Safe Mode or some other procedure.

The search rebuild and wipe out is sadly normal. Frankly I turned it off and use the old methods.

You're not alone..

Hi Julea..

There are countless threads to be found on the subject. Different user's found different ways of installing it. Some have yet to install it. I'll include some of those threads, a bit later on.

If in the end you're unable to install it, you might want to consider if you really need it. (See this)

For the time being, have a look at "Error code 800B010B while installing KB982670". Did you try installing it manually? IF you're still using Avast, did you try disabling it first? One user in the above thread found success disabling Avast's Web Shield. (See page 2)

The .NET Framework 4 Client Profile is available on Windows Update

Did you try searching the forums? There are many threads on the subject. Aaron Stebner's Weblog is a wealth of .NET Framework information. Whether you have a week to search through it, is different story. Happy

You know I've not downloaded a WU manually for so long, I've forgotten how (LOL).I'll research what you hafve above, and see if I really do need it.

Thanks for your time.

Yours too Bob.

You're right -- I don't need

I've had nothing but issues with the Net Frame stuff and keep hiding them -- don't know why I didn't this one (LOL).

Good decision, Julea. :)

That's one way to solve the problem. If for some reason you ever need it in the future, I'm sure you'll find out.

I'd embarrass myself, if I told you when (and which version) I last installed .NET Framework on this particular system. I believe it was in "1900 something or other". Grin Not really. But the fact is, I haven't needed the most recent versions.

If you wish to add some confusion to your day, read: ".NET Framework Client Profile". Devil

Glad we were able to help..
