Have you tried running them with VLC?
Had the same problem so thanx for the tip! It worked great. You can also open the video file, then go to the video menu and use the subtitles track option to open the subtitles file (again providing they are in the same folder and have the same name). If you use this option, don't remove the file extension from the name or it doesn't work.
