Aug 29, 2004 3:09AM PDT

My PC has a pentium 3 processor & windows XP. I have recently opened my hotmail account in outlook express 6 . However, on being prompted for downloading folders for this account ,whenever I click "yes" , an error report like this comes - " an unknown error has occured" - the details being :

"Configuration:
Account: Hotmail
Server: http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp
User name: tolanimk@hotmail.com
Protocol: HTTPMail
Port: 0
Secure(SSL): 0
Code: 80004005
Please help.

I've run into this a lot in the last month. 9 for 10 times it was a misconfigured firewall. Something at gmail, hotmail and yahoo mail seems to be tripping up firewall users. Best of luck,

Bob

This seems to be a rather common error. Microsoft should know it by now! http://www.google.com/search?&q=%22outlook%20express%22%2080004005%20hotmail
gives 2400 hits, on the web alone (presumably more in the discussion groups). Most of them won't be very helpful, I'm afraid.

I've looked into this one: http://www.talkaboutsoftware.com/group/microsoft.public.internet.mail/messages/112467.html
It offers at least a thing to do.
I also read about this problem being cured spontaneously two days later, or "it goes wrong 95% of the cases, but works the other 5%".

But, of course, Bob may be right this is a firewall issue. You're behind a router? Using Windows XP firewall. Upgraded to SP2?

I hope you can find it. Let us know.

Kees

Thanks a lot for your replies.
After reading your replies the next day ie. today, I tried it again & at the first go , the folders were downloaded ! (I had not made any changes to my settings after the earlier tries ) .

It seems , it is unpredictable like so many other things in life !!!

Thanking you all again,

I was having the same problem about a week ago .I had no problem adding the 3 accounts( one POP3- two msn/hotmail)to OE6 in XP, but couldn't download the folders for the two hotmail accounts. Finally, I removed all 3, added the hotmail ones first, POP3 last, found that tip somewhere while Google searching for advice. After adding each account, I immediately closed OE without attempting to access the account.Reopened OE, selected the newly added account from the folders list and..PRESTO,the folders downloaded.Did the same for each account...Jo

Re: unable to download folders for hotmail folder in outlook

After applying Windows XP Service Pack 2, my Outlook Express 6 was unable to access mails on my personal Hotmail account, as usual.

After looking for many "solutions" I found nothing to work and really solves it. I started to play with the http address reported by Outlook in the error box "Code: 80004005", and noticed the IE new security feature was asking for my response about services.msn.com was trying to access my trusted site oe.hotmail.com

The solution was simple, add services.msn.com to my Trusted Sites list. Problem solved!

To add a trusted site:

services.msn.com
oe.hotmail.com

Tools, Internet Options, select Security tab, click "Trusted sites", then "Sites" button, and be sure to add the following sites:

services.msn.com
oe.hotmail.com

Due some MSN Messenger issues, I also found useful to add other sites as "trusted":
messenger.hotmail.com
*.hotmail.com
hotmail.msn.com
loginnet.passport.com
memberservicesnet.passport.com
*.passport.com
memberservicesnet.passport.net
*.passport.net

Uncheck the "Require server verification (httpsHappy..."

Ok, Apply.

Good luck,

new hotmail account?
Jan 9, 2005 12:20AM PST

if your hotmail account is brand new, that you have not opened it from your web browser, you haven't completely activated it yet.

to solve this problem, open your web browser and go to www.hotmail.com, in the top conner at your left hand, you should see a box, put your email address and your passsword and click sign in.

Your e-mail should open, in the top of the page, you'll see some tabs, like 4 tabs or 3 [today-mail-calendar-contacs]. the thing is that you won't see the Inbox, you'll see some annousement of choosing so type of hotmail account. free or paying. don't get too carried away with these advertisiments.

At the lower part of this page you'll see something about having or get a free e-mail account. and a link that says click here in blue, Read the whole page, so you won't get in trouble.

after you do the correct, well your inbox will appear and msn will send you a message. is because you've activated your hotmail account.

after when the message appears in outlook express click yes, and your folders will be retrieved form your hotmail account. and whenether youwant to see your new messages, click send and receive. this command will also send your composed messages stored in the outbox.

good luck and please send your feed back with the results!!
