Question

Unable to connect to internet

Aug 11, 2011 9:12PM PDT

Hi folks. After some years my computer had become slow and hangy, also it seemed that it had been crashing and rebooting if I left it for extended periods as sometimes I'd come back to find all programes closed down.

So, I decided to format and reinstall XP. That went ok, and the updates too.

My problem is that now sometimes (one in ten?) when I try to connect to the internet, it won't. IE opens... the 'Dial Up Connection' box appears, but it's unable to make a connection. My USB modem appears to be working fine though as the light in my Taskbar is green as it should be. I can also carry on using other programes ok, the computer is still running. In playing I've found if I unplug the modem USB lead at this time the computer crashes to a blue screen. If I unplug it after it's made a connection though, I get no crash.

Parts of 'WhoCrashed' are below. Any help on my next step please?

Answer
Over 10 years later I see this bug.

1. " In playing I've found if I unplug the modem USB lead at this time the
computer crashes to a blue screen. If I unplug it after it's made a
connection though, I get no crash."

I have yet to find a cure for this old bug. I've seen this crash across hundreds of machines so the advice is to "don't do that."

2. "crashing and rebooting if I left it for extended periods"

Tell the forum about your yearly cleaning. Example at http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-11319_7-6240575-1.html

that adiusbaw.sys is at fault and that is a driver for your USB modem. It is possibly corrupt.

Go to the manufacturer's web site and download and install their latest drivers for your modem

Let me share a little more.

I did track it down to a driver and the official answer is "we're not fixing this and stop unplugging the USB like that."

I've discoverd the Event Viewer. Do these 2 mean anything?

The General Purpose USB Driver (adildr.sys) service failed to start due to the following error. The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

The Cardex service failed to start due to the following error. Cannot create a file when that file already exists.

Regarding the driver, not sure I can find an updated one, I've tried the only updates I can find.

You appear to have tried to move/change drivers to newer but that failed.

Now you have to go back to what worked. Either system restore and if that fails, get your files out and reload the machine.

This is a clean install...

The modem worked ok before I reinstalled windows. I guess one of the updates from MS has upset things? I'm thinking the best thing to do is get a router and dump the old modem. In googling I see a few who use the same modem as me (Sagem Fast 800) with this, or similar, problems.

I see folks struggle with clean installs.

It's a shame really. Those factory restores are not that terrible but you will find folk that dawn the robes and preach about clean installs being the one true way to great windows performance.

Call me the heretic but I go with what works. I'll use the factory OS then uninstall what I don't want.

I got an ethernet router and removed all the USB modem drivers. Cheating I know, but it seems to have fixed it. Many thanks for the help.
