Resolved Question

unable to change keychain access password in Lion

Apr 13, 2012 3:23PM PDT

Having a difficult time changing my Keychain Password. I declined setting-up a password on the MacBook Pro (with Lion) I just bought at the Apple Store.

Followed Apple Help's steps to change a forgotten Keychain access password: enter Apple ID and Password. Click reset. The dialogue box declines everything - Apple ID, Apple ID and Password, and just Password.

So I'm never able to reset.

Note that I used the word COPY

and not MOVE.

To copy from folder to folder, hold down the Option key while dragging and dropping

Restart

Went for Option 1. Thanks.

I Copy and Pasted the above. Restarted the laptop and have dialogue box: PhotoStreamAgent wants to use the "login renamed 1 keychain"

What Would be next step? Keychain Access still has pop-ups. Is it actually locking? Seems if I Cancel at Dialogue box numerous times, Application opens....I think.

Answer
But your password was not forgotten,
Apr 13, 2012 11:30PM PDT

it never existed and while it is fairly easy to reset the account password, that does not reset the Keychain Password.

Here is what I would suggest.

As you have not had this machine for very long, it seems, you probably do not have a bunch of stuff that accrued on that machine.
Launch Terminal from the Applications/Utilities folder
Copy and paste the following: rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone

Once done, close all the open windows and reboot.
The MBP will now boot and it will not find that directory and file so it will assume that this is a first time out of the box boot-up
Now go through the setup process and create yourself an Admin account and give yourself a Password.
Continue to use that account and all will be well.

Alternatively, if you have a bunch of stuff that you need

Make a folder inside the Shared Folder, Hard Drive/Users/Shared, and make folders inside there called Documents, Music, Photos, Movies.
Copy the contents of the corresponding folders from your user drive into the newly created folders.
Repeat until all the stuff has been copied.
Now run that Terminal command as shown above and create the new Admin account.
Once done, copy the Contents of the folders in the Shared Folder back into the corresponding folders inside the newly created User account.

(Copying stuff into the Shared Folder ensures that there will not be a permissions problem when you try to use whatever file is inside there)

Let us know how you get on

able to login, but have dialogue box Keychain Access passwor
Apr 15, 2012 8:04AM PDT

Thank you. I can now open everything. But am still getting constant dialogue box pop-up asking for Keychain Access to mail.

I have tried Cut and Paste (Option 1) repeatedly.

When I logged into iCloud and iTunes, should I have done something to turn off Keychain Access?

Don't think so but,

option one was NOT cut and paste

it was COPY

As you can now open everything, it may be time to make a new keychain.

In the Keychain app, go to File> New Keychain

follow the instructions and you should be good. You will still need to "teach" the new keychain you passwords and such but that should be no problem

I you were actually in the new account that you created, the keychain should ask if you want to store the passwords in keychain but it should not be asking anything else

The apps on the iPad should be fine
Apr 15, 2012 9:36PM PDT

as they are linked with the iPad and your App Store Apple ID. (iTunes account)

Before you sync, make sure that you have the contents of your old iTunes app, in your new one.
