Unable to boot win xp pro

Trying to help a friend who has xp pro.I use win98se so not familar with xp.Here is her problem.
The computer was working ok until she went to shutdown
and it just hung up so used power off button.Now when try to start it just gets to xp window and will go no farther.I tried safe mode but get same thing.Tried to repair from booting with xp cd and this is as far as can get. 1 c:\winnt which windows installion would you like to log unto (to cancel , press enter) I select 1 than get (type the administrator password)
No idea what can do next as dont have password.
This computer was given to her by her children along with the xp cd and driver discs for her hardware but know nothing of a password.What can i try next please.

You can try the following:

1. On startup press F8 and get into the Safe Mode.
It will display several options.
Try selecting to boot with the Last Known Good Configuration.

2. If that doesn't work get into Safe Mode and do System Restore back to before the problem.

3. If no joy try and boot with the XP CD and choose repair and it will boot into the Recovery Console (Black DOS like screen). When it asks you to enter the Administrator P/W try leaving it blank and press enter. Hopefully there is no P/W.
Once in the Recovery Console type: FIXBOOT

Found ot the admin. password was PASSWORD entered this and got restored.
