Question

Unable to access internet, system restore, help & support

Oct 31, 2013 11:45AM PDT

Following a system restore after being unable to re-install Mcafee i am now unable to access the internet, the help & support, user accounts or the system restore tool on windows XP home. I am connect to the BT home hub but it says it cannot connect to the internet. I can access the internet through other PC's so i can rule that out. Tried accessing these programmes in safe mode but with no success. clearly some settings have changed perhaps caused by uninstalling Mcafee & or the last system restore.

Any help to resolve this issue would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Answer
Mcafee and other AV suites

Do block the internet (for your safety) under such conditions. While I call such thuggish behavior you can try removing all of the AV suite (use their removal tools) and then google this -> XP NETSH RESET.

sorry for the late reply as have had other commitments over the last few days.

ran a uninstall for mcafee to get rid of any residual parts of the anti virus software. re-installed IE (which i shouldn't have deleted) which gave me back access from my dell inspiron to the internet. re-loaded mcafee but still couldn't access the security centre which just came up as a blank screen which i understood would be a windows issue. ran a windows repair which worked as the security centre now opens without any issues.

i still cannot get IE to open as it crashes which to be honest it did before all my issues began. the odd thing is that the memory space on C:\ drive has gone from 7% remaining to 48% remaining ? everything appears to be present including all my saved documents & pictures so not sure where nearly +20GB has gone to.

Very odd.

Since IE crashes I'd research IE's reset defaults as well as its safe mode. Not to be confused with the OS's safe mode.

As to your documents and pictures, we only lose what we don't backup and no one would be fixing an OS until their files are safe on a few backups.
