General discussion

Unable to access 1 website.

Aug 13, 2007 7:20AM PDT

Hi,
I have asked this question in several forum and no one has been able to figure this out.

I can not access: www.onlinebandit.com. It is not a gambling site just a game site. All of my friends can get there plus people in the forums I've been to.

If I can remember correctly these are some of the things I've tried. Its been a long journey.

1. I used to have McAfee. It has been deleted with the McAfee uninstall tool. I then d/l Kaspersky KIS7. I have done this process 4 times.

2. While both of these were deleted I tried to get to the site. Nothing. IE can't display the page.

3. I've contacted the site management they told me to use the site called the *cloak*. This site did allow me to d/l the client but when I was asked to run the application. IE7 said it had encountered a problem and had to close.

No matter what I do I can't get to this site.
Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
Nancy

I just tried it and it downloaded

from the link at download.com that I provided. It sat there and hanged for a minute and then it finished.

You then need to log in.

See if you can get there by ...
Aug 13, 2007 8:52AM PDT

using the following IP Address:

http://212.112.237.151 as that is the address of www.onlinebandit.com

If you can, then your problem is likely simply a hosts file which is a simple text file located in your - %WinDir%\system32\drivers\etc\HOSTS - directory and you will note that it has no file extension.

If it is your problem, then you can edit it to remove the offending entry which will likely look like:

127.0.0.1 www.onlinebandit.com

- Collapse -
have tried it
Aug 13, 2007 9:12AM PDT

If I type that address in the browser I have the same problem. When I do a search for hosts, there is nothing in there about online bandit, so I can't delete it.

Thanks

I can't do it

I got an e-mail message that there was a response here and I don't see it. It said just tried it and it works. In the initial post. I said that all the others I have asked to help me solve this problem can get to that site. I however can't. Does anyone have anything else I can try?

Thanks Nancy

Hi,
I've deleted cookies, temps ... used reg cleaners. I've changed the mtu size of the packets. I've tried it all. I will delete cookies and temps again.

They work
Aug 14, 2007 1:16AM PDT

Both work for me. I am script enabled and java applett enabled. But would either of these cause my IE to say it must close due to a problem as soon as I hit run on the application?

Thanks,
Nancy

I tried "www.onlinebandit.com" and "http://www.bodo.com/javame.htm" with no problems.

Maybe java and IE7 don't play well together.Nancy might be better off reverting back to IE6,or keep IE7 for updates and install FF.

Nancy try this,IE>tool>internet options>advanced tab>scroll down to Java and make sure the box is ticked beside "use JRE (your version) for applet.

Also check this LINK

How about uninstalling, then reinstall in case its corrupt.

Back to the basics. Go into a command window and type the following two commands (each ends with enter):

ping 212.112.237.151
ping www.onlinebandit.com

Copy and paste the results in your answer.

Tom,

IE7 was working then quit don't know why. I have also deleted all versions of Jave and d/l again I have the current version. Someone thought it was remnants of McAfee left over before I switched to Kaspersky. But thats been double and triple checked. JRE is ticked.

Kees,
Dos window wouldn't let me copy but here is what it said:

ping 212.112.237.151 with 32 bytes of data
request timed out
request timed out
request timed out

ping statistics for 212.112.237.151
packets sent = 4
receive = 0
Lost = 4 (100% loss)
-------------------------------

pinging www.onlinebandit.com [212.112.237.152] with 32 bytes of data
request timed out
request timed out
request timed out
request timed out
Ping statistics for 212.112.237.152
packets sent = 4
received = 0
Lost = 4 (100% loss)

Thank you both,
Nancy

Re: ping
Aug 14, 2007 8:04AM PDT

This clearly shows it's NOT a DNS or hosts file problem. Definitely ruled out. But it shows also that you can't ping the site, while I can. And not only that I can, it's very fast: 30 ms, while www.cnet.com (216.239.122.220) takes 140 ms.

By the way, are you sure the .152 is OK? With me, www.onlinebandit.com translates to .151.

Also it clearly shows that Java and Javascript aren't an issue at all. Ping is very basic and totally independent of those very high level features. Definitely ruled out also.

One other basic test (like ping):
tracert 212.112.237.151

That shows how the connection goes about the internet. With me, it ends in 17 steps at ipx-151-237-112-212.ipxserver.de [212.112.237.151] in 30 ms indeed. That shows the server is located in Germany (and explains that it's faster for me in the Netherlands).

With that information, it might be time to contact the helpdesk of your ISP and let them decide if it's their fault. That's a real possibility. Another one might be that it's on Spybots list of bad sites so that blocks it. I've never understood how that works exactly. Do you happen to use Spybot S&D's "immunize" feature?

And yes you CAN copy and paste from a command window, once you know how to do it. Just click on the the leftmost symbol (something like c:\) in the titlebar to open the system menu and choose edit; first mark with your mouse, then copy). Once it's on the clipboard, you can paste into any Windows application.

Hope this helps.

Kees,
So sorry 151 is correct and ty for letting me know how to copy from a dos window. I will contact my isp again and see if I can get any further with them. Does packet loss mean anything significant?

Thanks for all your help.

Just to let you know my isp provider assumes no responsibility for this issue.

Some time ago I had the same issue,no matter what I tried I couldn't access one site,in fact it was cnet that helped me to solve this,I believe it was Grif that helped me.I checked your profile and don't know what programs you have.I my case spybot was set to not allow this site,do you have any programs that might be set not to allow this site.

Then I'd be interested ...
Aug 14, 2007 5:08PM PDT

to see the output of the tracert command, just like you posted the output of ping. Could you do that?

The final check depends on your connection.
- If it's dial-up, just configure any other PC with a modem where this site works to use your account at your ISP and see if it still works. If not, it's proven it's an ISP-problem. If it does, it's proven to be a problem with your PC.
- If it's cable or ADSL find somebody with a laptop that can try it on your connection. If for such a laptop the site is accessible everywhere except with you, it's proven to be an ISP problem. If it works with another PC and not with yours, the problem is on your PC.

If 'something' is blocking this site (and only this site) and you can't find out what this something is, the only remedy would be to do a clean install of Windows XP. It certainly should work out of the box. Then gradually built up your system by installing everything you want, checking after each step.
If it doesn't work with XP out of the box that's another way to prove it's an ISP problem, but rather destructive. And even then it could be your own router in stead of something outside your house. You're sure you didn't block sites in the router?

totally unbelievable

Hello,
After 2 solid weeks of being unable to access onlinebandit.com I wake up this am and get right in. I have spent countless hours in forums with the most incredible people trying to help me solve this problem. I had contact with the site owners to no avail.

Apparently they reset the servers yesterday and bam I can get right in. I had a friend have issues not being able to get in she immediately removed the client d/l again and got in. Lucky girl.

I want to thank all of you that gave of your time to help me with this issue, your time and dedication is very much appreciated.

I will surely recommend all my friend to you.

Thanks again,
Nancy

Glad to see it's solved.

It certainly confirms my ideas that it was something outside your PC.

That's very difficult, if not impossible, to diagnose for mere mortals with no access to the machine or to loggings with the ISP.
