Resolved Question

UN55HU8500FXZA and DD pass through

May 5, 2014 2:01AM PDT

Hi, just got this model and had trouble with my Sony bluray player hdmi into a Sony STR-DA5400ES receiver, hdmi into the Samsung. It didn't recognize a 3d television so I hooked the BD directly to the Samsung, which fed digital optical audio to the receiver. The 3d disc played fine but the DTS didn't pass through. I ended up running optical out of the BD to the receiver and that did the trick. The Samsung sends DD to the receiver from my cable box fine. Any ideas? Thanks.

If the source is HDMI, according to HDCP rules you should not get more than stereo to pass through. This is not a Samsung issue. I see this on all HDMI HDCP compliant gear.

It's interesting the cable box works but don't let that confuse you into thinking this should pass more than stereo. Rather than repeat all those prior discussions, why not call it in and hear it straight from the maker?

Thanks, but...

Gandalf is chuckling but still confused. I seem to remember friends having their DVD player, ATV, Roku, etc. plugged into their TV's and the TV sound going to their receiver, particularly ones who have older recvrs that don't have enough (or any) HDMI ports.
You did notice that I'm using optical audio out from the Samsung to my receiver, didn't you?

Thanks for the replies...

As this is HDMI input

It is one of these prickly areas of HDCP where you can see in my further reading how Samsung read what should and should not pass through.

While I think it's a travesty or "bad idea" to limit such since in no way did it plug the analog or other copy protection hole, it did create what would have been better for consumers to be a minefield of things that work, then don't then has everyone pointing fingers. Some fingers even waggle.

Well, I have a work around anyway. I agree, it's not a good idea on Samsung's part, or the industry's.

Thanks again.
