UN55B8000 picture flashes black

by michelsonc / November 25, 2009 2:32 AM PST

Just bought the UN55B8000 last week and am extremely pleased with the picture quality: almost. From time-to-time (sometimes a few minutes apart, but usually hours apart) the screen goes to black for less than a second and displays the Source List (HDMI1/DVI) and other data. The picture then returns to normal. I do not think this happens while watching Blue-Ray on HDMI2.

The HDMI1/DVD input is fed by a HDMI cable from a Verizon FIOS box.

I think the TV settings are pretty much the default settings that came straight out of the box.

michelsonc,

When the picture cuts out, do you still have audio?

No audio during the "blackout".

I updated to the current firmware today. I have also moved the input from HDMI1 to HDMI3. Had the "blackout" 2 or 3 times during this evenings viewing. This may not be true, but it MIGHT occur when the program changes scenes (camera angles). Yea, doesn't sound likely, but it SEEMS the picture is in a new scene when it comes out of the blackout.

As I said, the screen goes black except for the info block that indicates HDMI3 and 120X1080i @ 60HZ. (I think)

michelsonc,

If the INFO bar comes up when the picture goes black, that's a signal interruption from the source box. In most cases, doing a reset on the cable/sat box will alleviate this problem. If not, call your service provider and ask them to refresh or update your box, as that can solve the issue if that's the problem.

If that doesn't work, then it might be a good idea to have a service technician come out and inspect the set.

Keep me posted.

Thanks. I'll try the STB reset later today. My family would break my arm if I messed with it during the Thanksgiving Day Parade!

I didn't have an interruption using the previous TV (Sony KF-60XBR800 using component cable), but stranger things do happen. I'll also connect the old UFH antenna and see if there is a problem using an over-the-air signal.

Partial cure. I visited the Verizon FIOS forum and there are dozens of complaints like mine. It seems this is a known problem with Verizon's HD DVR (Motolola QIP 7216). For the time being I've set the STB to 720p and no more blackouts. Rumor is that Verizon will switch to Cisco STBs next year.
