UN46B6000 dvd/bluray sound muted

Aug 1, 2009 2:36PM PDT

I recently purchased a Samsung LED LCD TV, the UN46B6000. I'm having issues with the sound through HDMI. When connected to a Blu-Ray/DVD player, the sound is very muted and the voices even more so. I think it may have something to do with the audio input to the tv switching to a 5.1 format.

When watching a blu-ray movie through my Sony PS3, I noticed that the previews before the movie sounded fine. When the actual movie started, however, I had to turn the sound up a lot to hear, and even then, the sound of the voices was very low. I am thinking the sound changed because the format changed from stereo to surround.

This is the same problem I had when watching from a different dvd player, so I assume the problem is with a setting I have on the television. The PS3 can output sound in various formats including bitstream, PCM 2ch, 5.1, and 7.1, dolby 5.1, dts, etc. The other hdmi input from my DVR sounds fine, presumably because it's in stereo.

Is there a setting on my tv I can set to receive and play the sound properly? What format should the sound be in for the tv?

Don't know how your components are hooked up, but on most Samsung's including mine, you need an optical cable from tv back to receiver,as hdmi from tv to receiver WILL NOT produce 5.1 only stereo...try that and good luck

stereo sound

All I want is stereo sound, actually. I'm just not able to hear the sound properly, and I think it has something to do with the format. Is there a setting to force it to output/input stereo sound?

cfchase,

I would think PCM/2.0 out in the PS3 would do the trick. Even so, the television will take the audio signal and reduce it to 2.0, so I'm not sure where the lack of audio is coming from.

And this is assuming you just want to listen in stereo from the television's speakers, correct?

linear PCM 2 ch 44.1 khz

Yes, it is set to linear PCM 2 Ch 44.1khz. There are a range of frequencies available, and I wasn't sure which the television was capable of receiving.

I would have thought the Linear PCM 2Ch would have been correct, as well. I thought it was the dvd player when it first happened, but now that the same problem is happening on the PS3, I have to assume it's the television. Since it works well when receiving input from the DVR and also sounded good during the previews of the exact same movie, I really think it's some setting or something I'm missing. Perhaps there's a setting on the ps3 I need to set to make it output a stereo soundtrack.

I really like my tv otherwise... it's driving me nuts.

cfchase,

I would suggest trying some of the different settings. The fact that it plays previews just fine, but then not the movie is the baffling part. What would change in the television from previews to the actual movie? The video and audio track would be the logical conclusion, which points to the player or the movie itself moreso than the television.

But let's try this. Go to the TOOLS button on the remote and toggle SRS TS HD to On if it's Off, and see if this fixes the issue.

If that doesn't work, try going back into the TOOLS button menu and selecting a different sound mode.

Keep me posted.

Tried SRS TS HD on and off, no difference. Tried all the audio modes (standard, movie, etc). The preview still sounds great. The movie still sounds bad. Are there any audio output settings from the PS3 or dvd player to try?

Not that I can think of. Does this happen with every movie you try?
