Question

uh40h6400 seems to destroy usb flash drives! weird

Jul 12, 2015 4:28AM PDT

This is really strange and I'd be so relieved to discover I was't the only person it is happening to: I attach a usb flash drive to the TV that contains film I've downloaded on a computer. It worked fine at first, but in past few weeks, the screen is telling me that there is no media available, or that it is 'unsupported' or a film is startng and then suddenly dispappearing. Anyone know why?

Is this a new USB flashdrive?
Jul 12, 2015 5:30AM PDT

Did you buy it off Ebay?

- Collapse -
No, it's a drive I have used before successfully
Jul 12, 2015 10:07AM PDT

No. The thing is, it worked for a few weeks and the TV played everything, especially mp4...then suddenly it stopped doing that and told me files were unsupported (even a film that I had watched half of the night before), and when I plugged drive into computer, it told me it had faults

Tell more about "downloaded."
Jul 12, 2015 5:59AM PDT

I'm finding folk dive into video downloading and stub their toe on video encoding and more. That is, folk are screaming about encoding/decoder support in the TVs with "It plays on my PC." These TVs are not even close as to decoder support.

I have downloaded films for years

I used to watch films on my computer screen. The Samsung suddenly stopped working, even with bog standard mp4 it's telling me files are unsupported

MP4 is not standard.
Jul 12, 2015 10:17AM PDT

I've used video encoder examiners and found few that have the same encoding in the MP4 container.

MP4 is a container. It's not an encoding. Sorry but this has turned to yet another discussion about encoding, containers and well, the usual.

Compare the encoding to what worked and now what doesn't.

Also, Samsung and other makers have been known to drop decoders to get some memory back to support updates. What Samsung has been very careful about is to not drop any documented decoders.

Again MP4 being a container, no one would ever tell us they play all MP4 files. You can write you support the MP4 container. The wording here can inflame folk new to this.

Ah...

Thank you...I will change the .mp4 to .mkv on the files.

MKV is another container. It does not dictate audio and/or video encoding.

.....flashdrive you've tried on the TV? Did you reformat the drive and change from one type filesystem to another, such as FAT32 to NTFS?

- Collapse -
....No
Jul 13, 2015 5:40AM PDT

...it isn't. My first thought/hope was that it was the drive so I tried another. And reformatted the original one

TV problem then
Jul 13, 2015 10:12AM PDT

Check settings on it, see if there's anything that would block the USB port from being accessed. If not, then something is broken.

vacuum the port on TV

maybe something in it, dust, cat hair, baby "fed it".

Well...

It's a new TV. I've tried different usb ports.

A smart TV isn't as smart as a PC.

A possible solution: play on your PC and use a hdmi-cable (or wireless hdmi) to view it on your TV. That works on any TV, smart or non-smart.

Which is why
Jul 15, 2015 8:02AM PDT

I use other players. Today I have the Amazon Fire TV, WDTV Live and a Chrome stick on the TV. When they roll out in force I'll swap one of these for that PC on a stick.

Keep in mind that you are not alone in your complaints. I would be guessing that you want the TV maker to play everything but the answer is it won't for this or next year and even then one would have to replace the TV. For me, adding the WDTV Live really paid off.

When I got theTV a few weeks ago, it played everything; all I had to do was copy the file onto the flash drive - then it suddenly stopped. Even stuff I had already seen was coming up as "unsupported" or "files not found". Which is why I came on here

Does it work again after you reset the TV back to factory conditions? If not, you can try to make it a warranty issue.

That's different from how I understood it.

". Even stuff I had already seen was coming up as "unsupported" or "files not found"."

Sounds like it failed in some odd way. Time to make it a warranty issue.

I'm sorry to hear this! Have you tried a different USB drive to see if it is read on that? Also, is the firmware up to date on the unit?

I would love the opportunity to research this further. Can you send an e-mail to qasupport@sea.samsung.com? I look forward to speaking with you there! Thanks!
