Question

Ubuntu Top Programs

Feb 15, 2012 4:19AM PST

Hello, I was just wondering if I could get some people's opinions on what the top Ubuntu programs are for the following purposes;

1. Programming (In any languages, but preferably C/C++)

2. DVD Burning

3. Video Conversion

4. Bittorrent Client

5. IM Client

Thank you all in advance, and if you have anything to recommend that falls outside of the listed categories please don't be shy to share!

But about programming languages. I found the Ubuntu release is geared towards consumers and users and not programmers. I'm unsure why that is.

2. If you want to just burn data DVDs or music/MP3 CDs, then you can just use Brasero which comes with Ubuntu. There's also K3B as a good option for power users; a lot more powerful, a little less user friendly.

3. For video conversion I use Handbrake. It's another not-so-user-friendly program; if you find it a little difficult you could use a video editor such as Kdenlive or Openshot.

4. For Bittorrent I stuck with Transmission. It's default in Ubuntu, it works well, and it's easy to use. Deluge is another option.

5. Empathy (default) or Pidgin. I don't think it's worth trying Kopete or aMSN anymore.

1) Programing? Do not know that one, do not create program.

2) DVD Burning: K3B is the best, if you like Nero, you will feel right at home.

3) Video Conversion: Depending, Kino is good to extract video from a Camcorder; Cinelerra has tons of features but if you are a Pro you might like it; DVD Styler is pretty simple to use.

4) Bittorrent: BitTornado, aMule, KTorrent

5) IM Client: Kopete and Pidgin can do multiple profiles.

GCC

gcc (GNU C Compiler) is built in with all GNU/Linux distros. g++ (GNU C++ Compiler) should be available in your repos. To compile, "gcc [or g++] sourcefile.c [or .cc, .cpp, whatever] -o outputfile".

If you're looking for an IDE (God knows why), you can try Geany.
