General discussion

Ubuntu 5.10 and SUSE Linux 10.0 available for free download.

Ubuntu 5.10 and SUSE Linux 10.0 are available for free download from www. http://ubuntu.com/download and http://www.opensuse.org/download, respectively. In either case, your best bet is to download the ISO images for the distributions from one of the mirrors listed on those pages or via BitTorrent which is what I did.

Suse 10.0 on 64-bit is very nice but I needed to add a different ethernet card since the onboard NIC was unsupported.

I'll have Ubunto in a day or so for another box.

Cheers,

Bob

And will check it out for you. But since I only have the 120GB drive, I can't install all software available.

Local Installation

When you choose this installation type, you download CD images that hold the SUSE Linux installation sources to your local computer and proceed from there. This has several advantages.

You don't depend on an Internet connection during the installation
You can share the data on different computers
You can reuse the data at any time later
But it has its downsides as well.

You transfer a lot of data that you don't actually need
You need 5 blank CDs
Due to size limitations of CD images, you get only a subset of all packaged software for SUSE Linux.

This was on the released version of Suse 10.

I am a relative newbie so do not really understand the differences between these versions. I also don't understand why you mentions a 120 GB hard drive as a reason for not installing it all.

I'm assuming from the information on these pages at the Suse site that the only way to get the full range of software installation options is to do an internet installation.

Sorry, I should have been clearer.

Yes. Since I have this set installed, what should I check?

What is the item you want me to check?

Please keep it down to a handful.

No nothing. Just for future reference. Please don't bother. I was just commenting on my unsurity as to just exactly what they meant, and whether I indeed could not get access to everything unless I did it right then and there while I was online.

With Linux I have somewhat adopted the approach of install it all, find out what it is, and later remove what you don't need.

Thanks.
