I didn't find an answer to my question. While XP may run, it may not be stressing the machine in the 3D apps as much.

Are you using

the motherboard integrated video chip? 3D? it'll never happen. GODhack here mention GeForce 2 board; maybe that might be a start. I remember running "fractal screen saver" with software OpenGL (no way). So I got a better board (hardware OpenGl). My screen saver work ok but still not good enough for 3D. Just my own experience with 3D. One of these day I might get a GeForce2 and give it a try.

845G & 3-D

I found this: anandtech.com/show/915/10
Intel's New DDR Chipsets - 845E & 845G
by Anand Lal Shimpi on 5/20/2002 4:06:17 PM

"As far as integrated graphics go, the 845G is a bit of a disappointment. While it's sufficient for the corporate and low-end consumer markets it's difficult to say whether Intel's new 845G will be enough to power future Microsoft OSes that make extensive use of DirectX in their UI (e.g. Longhorn). For now, Intel is doing only the bare minimum to keep their feet in the graphics pool . . ."

Mobo won't support even AGP 8X

Sorry

hmm my ideas

You systems is not so capable when it comes to 3D.
You should try xubuntu. It is without 3D stuff by default. Wink

Or simply get cheap (or even second hand) AGP video card. Gf2 is not very good idea because nvidia do not support it. But something around gf 5xxx should be really enough. It is not worth to buy good video card for this PC.

Some Distros
Feb 21, 2011 9:36PM PST

Does not seems to work well with certain software.

I would try using PCLOS, Mandriva One and Knoppix. Those are Life Distros and see if they work for you.
