UAC - iTunes - Protected Mode

Jul 1, 2007 11:16PM PDT

Got a new PC, installed my music HD, installed iTunes and life was good...except I couldn't edit any song, artist etc. in iTunes. Info tab was greyed out. However, I loaded 1 new CD and I could edit those songs, hmm. If I turned UAC off, I could edit anything but now protected mode was turned off in IE7 as shown in the status bar. If I clicked on this, it took me to Internet Security Properties and Enable Protected Mode was checked, hmm.

Is there a way to run iTunes with UAC on and allow me to edit the data or should I just run with protected mode off. Or is it really on?
Thanks for the insight.
David

ITunes with Windows Vista
Jul 2, 2007 9:23AM PDT

Elsewhere in this Windows Vista forum is a thread about how to turn UAC off in Vista. You may have to do a Yahoo search to find it. All I know is I just installed 7.3 and when I try to execute it, I get an error message saying it has stopped working and Windows will notify me when a problem is found. I hope you have better luck than I am.

I know haow to turn it off. Why is it necessary to do so, to be able to edit song titles etc?

Two thoughts...

Have you tried right-clicking iTunes and choosing Run as Administrator? Despite using an administrative account it's sometimes necessary to run it as an administrator for it to function normally. Running it under Compatibility Mode for Windows XP SP2 also can help resolve such issues. That may let you leave UAC enabled. Unfortunately there's no patch, though, as iTunes continues to have problems under Vista.

As to Protected Mode for IE7, it requires UAC be enabled, so while Protected Mode may be selected IE's not actually running under it if UAC is disabled.

I am the Administrator
Jul 6, 2007 12:37AM PDT

Thanks again John for your help. There are no other accounts/users. The start menu shows me as Administrator. With UAC off - properties/shortcut tab - the open file location button and change icon button is greyed out. Advanced button - run as administrator is also greyed out.

Security tab - system & administrator shows all permissions (full control) except special permissions.

Details shows the "owner" as "system". Should I change to administrator?

I cannot find the compatibility tab.

Thanks again.

Go into Program Files...

The 'run as administrator' option being greyed out through the Advanced button is normal. There's also no need to change the owner...system is fine. However, it does sound like the wrong properties dialog box is being pulled up. Browse to the iTunes folder in C:\Program Files (may be under "Apple"), right-click iTunes.exe, and choose Properties. You should see a properties window similar to this. With a little luck the Compatibility tab will be present and you can try running it as XP SP2. Also, the Run as Administrator option you want should be displayed in the right-click menu, and is sometimes necessary even if you are using the administrative, and only, account.

Let us know how it goes.

A new PC & OS always requires troubleshooting
Jul 7, 2007 11:13PM PDT

Compatibility mode as XP2 created other problems. I have a white box with an ASUS MB, integrated sound by Realtek. The drivers are not totally Vista compatible, which creates "stuttering". I D/L the latest drivers last week and it was better but not there yet. XP2 made it noticably worse.

As for run as administrator, is this something that I need to address each time I start iTunes? Properties/Compatibility - privlege level -run as administrator is also greyed out. I'm concerned about the many settings being greyed out. In XP I used to use "open file location" often to find the .exe file. Why can't I here?

This is obviously an Apple issue. Maybe it's how I initially loaded the existing library. This isn't a "show-stopper" for me. I have others to address. Wait'll ya hear about the next one.

You've always been a great source. Thanks.
