U.S.: Soldiers not at fault for Italian agent's death

Apr 30, 2005 4:06AM PDT

BAGHDAD (AP) ? The U.S. Army has cleared American soldiers in the death of an Italian agent in Iraq and recommended no disciplinary action following an investigation, according to a report released Saturday.
"This was a tragic accident," investigating officer Brig. Gen. Peter Vangjel said in a statement expressing "deepest sympathies" to the agent's family.

Nicola Calipari was mistakenly shot to death on March 4 soon after he had secured the release of Italian journalist Giuliana Sgrena from Iraqi militants who had held her hostage for a month. U.S. soldiers fired on the Italians' vehicle as it approached a U.S. checkpoint near Baghdad's airport. Sgrena and another Italian agent were wounded.

its a shame some one died but thats the price you pay when you fail to slowdown for checkpoints

Perhaps you can understand

why the Italians might be skeptical

They haven't concluded their investigation of the incident.

Timeline of events on night of shooting of Italian agent

Marine aviators involved in the Italian cable car disaster

Captain Ashby, said, "Mistakes were made and that's obvious, otherwise, it wouldn't have happened, but they weren't all our mistakes" - and "we never intended intentionally ever to fly below 1000 feet. That is the God saken truth."

The incident has sparked popular anger in Italy and caused friction between the governments of the two countries. The Italian Government complained of delays in handing over the aircraft's flight data recorder.

Just as there was a delay handing over the auto to the Italians to carry out their investigation.

they paid to release that so called reporter.
and dave as you have never ever served on a check point much less served your country i am so glad your on there side they deserve you.

and as to what the italians say think the courts say not guilty.

if you speed up to a check point in a car or vehicle and if i was on that check point.
no one in that vehicle would have survived, those troops didnt do it right.

so tell the italians to slow down let some body know that they support terror as paying ransom is just that

The speed of the car

This is from a Reuters story, though the part about the satellite is from CBS so God knows whether it's true or they just made it up:

SPEED

CBS news has reported that a U.S. satellite had filmed the shooting and that it had been established the car carrying Calipari was traveling at more than 60 mph per hour as it approached the U.S. checkpoint in Baghdad.

I admire your sense of caution.

But here's what I do:
If a story supports my preconceived notions, then it's true.
If it attacks them, it's made up.
It's the SE way.

One can't be too careful when dealing with shady media types

So if a reputable news organization can confirm the CBS story, then I will be more inclined to believe it.

I strive for complete accuracy.
