General discussion

.txt attachment

Feb 12, 2006 4:39AM PST

Friend on XPSP2 forwarded me an email she received with an attachment with .txt suffix. Even though her file types are set to open .txt files with Microsoft Word, she got a message that notepad was involved and wouldn't open it. It opened fine for me using Word.
Any help on what I need to do with her computer will be appreciated.

Questions
Feb 12, 2006 6:58PM PST

Wouldn't she have to save it to file first to get that menu on right click? Or can she do it on the attachment right in the email?
Also, would like to figure out why I had no problem having Word open it and she did even though both of our machines have Word set to open .txt files.
Why does she get a notepad message which doesn't open it.

* Yes, in order to get the right-click menu she would have to download the file first.

* Have her verify that .txt is associated with Word. For that, go start->control panel->(appearance and themes)->folder options, select the File Types tab, and see what program is default to open .txt documents.

* Make sure that the file is actually a TXT file. I can name a file "document.txt" while the extension is ".doc". The full filename would then be "document.txt.doc". Select the View tab of Folder Options and uncheck "hide extensions for known file types." Then go back and verify the extension of the file is truly ".txt".

* Click here to download a .TXT file association fix.

Hope this helps,
John

John, please note my origial post which stated that her file association has Word set to open .txt.files as my computer does.
Thanks for trying, I'll go over and see what she might be doing that she is not telling me.

Just a note here
Feb 19, 2006 8:28PM PST

I know I'm late with this, but just a note that *.txt files are normally opened by Notepad. Notepad is the default application to open *.txt files, so if your Word opens them, then somewhere along the line you or someone else must have changed the default application.

Also, if the *.txt file is very large, Notepad may not be able to open it. Normally in such cases Notepad offers the use of ''Wordpad'', (usually found in Start > All Programs > Accessories).

Just something else as well. It is good policy never to open attachments direct from an email. Although good anti-virus applications should check all email attachments, it is advisable to save an attachment to the hard disk, (the Desktop is a good place for temporary storage), and then right click the file and select the option to scan with the installed AV application before opening the attachment. Email attachments are a common source of viruses.
