Two questions: firewire and Mini DV

Mar 21, 2006 9:42AM PST

What are the advantages of using a firewire cable instead of a USB?

And....

Can the Panasonic PVGS150 record back to the DV tape after a video has been edited? And if so, how do I do it?

Firewire vs. USB & Editing DV
Mar 21, 2006 7:14PM PST

Firewire and USB both have comparable high speed data transfer speeds. The difference is that USB sucks up more CPU resources than Firewire. Using like a movie editor, or some large scale CPU intensive program, USB will falter. Firewire is always the better choice over USB in larger data transfers (DV & harddrive data).

Editing DV and flushing back to the DV. I use iMovie on Mac, and I just go to Export or Share under the File menu. there is an option for Camcorder. This option records back on the camera. With Windows, i'm not too sure...

Firewire works reliably for digital video. USB does not.

As long as the Panasonic PVGS150 has a firewire connection, you can 'burn' a tape from a PC. The software can control the camera through the firewire connection, and this control extends to recording.

You do, of course, need to be sure that your video editor supports this operation. Sony Vegas, for one, does support it.
