Tv won't turn on

So the other day my son's Toshiba TV stopped working. It won't turn on at all. Sometimes it will turn on only after about an hour has passed after hitting the power button. I tried other outlets and still nothing. Now what's even more strange is that the directv box that was in his room also won't turn on. But if I unplug it, light comes on for a few minutes while I guess it reboots but then will turn off. Light in the back stays on. Oh also the remote for the box now also don't work. Put new batteries in and still nothing. Not even the light on the remote comes on. As of i was hit by a emp but just in the room. The light that is plugged in the same power strip still works. Any help with this? What is going on.
