TV wont turn on unless...

by chev327fox / November 28, 2009 3:38 AM PST

I have a 32" LCD Samsung TV and it wont turn on anymore. One day it just stop turning on. Today i thought i'd try something out because i had always noticed the little USB plug-in in the back of the TV. So i had a USB to USB cord lying around so i tried plugging it into my laptop to see if i could tap into it somehow. I figured it wouldn't work because i didn't have a driver for a TV on my computer, anyways it didn't work or even show up. However when it is plugged into the laptop and i hold the power button for a few seconds it suddenly works. but it only turns on when its plugged into the laptop. Please tell me why.

Thanks,
chev327fox

chev327fox,

I'm not sure why it would only work when plugged into the laptop. What other devices is it connected to that the television doesn't turn on when they're attached?

No no no... i plugged the computer into the service port on the TV, not for picture input from the computer. I know its strange. I dont even know why i thought to try holding the power button while i was hooked into the service USB port on the TV. I put the cable for input and like i said the tv turns on and works fine when i have the service USB port on the TV plugged into the computer and hold the power button for a few seconds on the TV. When i unhook the USB and turn the TV off the TV wont turn back on nomatter what i do.

chev327fox,

I have to admit, that's the first I've heard of that symptom. Or of a computer hooking up to a service port. (Though, I admit, that sounds like something I would do!)

I don't know what could have gone wrong, but the best suggestion I can make is to reverse the process. Plug it in and turn it on, and then hold down the Power OFF button and remove the service port.

If that doesn't work, it's probably going to require service.

The Samsung RF23M8090SG

One of the best French door fridges we've tested

A good-looking fridge with useful features like an auto-filling water pitcher and a temperature-adjustable "FlexZone" drawer. It was a near-flawless performer in our cooling tests.
