Tv screen...won't seem to come clean?

I'm trying to clean the screen of a Sony 42" lcd rear projection tv. When the tv's on you can't tell, but when off it looks the the screen is all smudged up. I tried just a damp cloth and it didnt really seem to help. Is there something else I could be doing? Thanks.
