In that size and price range check out Westinghouse LCDs. They have been rated as very good for a budget HDTV brand.

The picture quality made my eyes hurt, personally i'd rather play my games in SD with nice, vibrant, accurate colors, white white's, and deep blacks then play on a set where you essentially trade all that for a higher resolution. If you're willing to spend $1000 and don't mind a bulky CRT I've heard nothing but good things about Sony's XBR970 and since it is a CRT (and the creme' de la creme' of CRT's at that) it's picture will be on par or better than that of a set that would cost 2-3 times as much with a different technology; o and yes it is HD I e-mailed Sony and they say it will handle 720p and 1080i through it's component and HD inputs. No PC input on it though but I'm pretty sure there are ways to hook a PC up through HDMI, probably something as simple as a DVI-to-HDMI adapter.
