TV choice: What would you pick?

Nov 1, 2006 11:46AM PST

Hi CNETers,

I was wondering if it is even worth it to get an LCD or a DLP projection?

-- I do not watch much HDTV.
-- Almost all of the TV I watch is Tivo'd with a regular tivo (non-HD)
-- I play ps2 a lot.
-- I have comcast digital cable
-- I would love to plug my computer into my tv.

I would love to have a big screen tv. I currently have a 32-inch Sharp CRT. 40 inch LCD or a 60 inch projector would be great

My price range is 1500-2500. Any ideas or help? I appreciate any and all suggestions!

Thanks!

UNLESS YOU ARE GOING TO USE IT FOR HI-DEF VIEWING

If you upgrade your comcast service to hi-def and add the hi-def package then I would say do upgrade but computor use and gaming I would say dont bother. There is nothing sweeter than a nice home theater system then keep your computor in another room and do your gaming there computors and home theater systems do not ork well together steweeee

First off the PS2 will most likely not look very good on a HDTV. You are just going to magnify your low res textures.

Secondly, if you plan on not getting HD broadcasting or an HD movie player (blu-ray or HD-DVD), then there is not much of a point.

However, if you are going to be getting the PS3 or a 360--then you will see a huge difference. I plan on getting the new Sony KDS-R60XBR2 just for my PS3 so I can enjoy eye popping visuals on my games and utilize the blu-ray player and see if it really is much better than DVDs or if it is just a bunch of hype about nothing.

Bottom line--don't buy one until you commit to going all HD!!!! If you are not willing to get all the necessary accompanyments that go along with your HDTV purchase--then don't waste your money.

Well, until you get one you won't. But when you get one you will!
I went from a 32"CRT to a 47" RP set and love it.

Do some reading at this link. There are many good HDTV Plasma, LCoS, DLP and LCD in your price range. Go to stores and spend sometime looking. The first time you go leave you check book/credit cards at home. John
