Question

Turntable to active monitors

Mar 20, 2016 10:15AM PDT

Hi all,
I have this setup:

Stanton T92 USB (preamplified turntable)
Argon 7450A (150w active monitors)

Which means that sounds outputs directly in LINE from the turntable and goes through RCA cables to the speakers that amplify the LINE sign within the same cabinet.

Now, if I connect a laptop to these active monitors the sound quality and gauge is extremely higher and better, therefore it seems the turntable is not able to preamp the PHONO signal properly.
I'm wondering if is possible and suggested to buy an amplifier or mixer in order to gain something more.....

thanks Plain

Answer
This sounds like you need a receiver

That will have the usual equalizer you can tune to your preferences. Pre-amps can cost as much so my nod is to shop receivers.

Ok tell us exactly how it will be connected.

with the laptop or not? What output connection is on the turntable, RCA, phone plug, usb? What connection is on the laptop? If you can use these speaker with the laptop now, then in theory, the turntable should work ok. Since you have everything already, why not give it a try and see if the quality is good enough for your liking.

A receiver...interesting, I`ll check that out!

To what concerns the laptop I only mentioned it because the sound quality when the laptop is connected to the speakers, compared to the turntable is quite higher and louder. The turntable has RCA (with a switch that I can put on PHONO or LINE), and it has also a usb output. I just connected the laptop with a normal 3.5 jack to the active monitors.

My question now is, does the receiver amplifies the sound from the turntable?!
I feel a bit dumb with those questions, but this topic is somehow tricky....

thanks!!

If you are thinking of hi-fi sound,

I am not sure if I want to use the speaker system you have unless the internal amplifier can be bypass. I notice the amplifier is "class AB" which is not exactly for hi-fi.

Topic not tricky per se

An AV receiver contains an amplifier under the hood, so it's fairly straightforward Wink

OTOH, that Argon model allows the choice of inputs in back (see knob), so you might first consult the Argon user manual to see what specifications you need to keep in mind regarding your various inputs (e.g. turntable, laptop, etc.).

It will likely be a comparison you would have to make yourself by borrowing a receiver and testing it out to see what improvement in sound you may or may not be missing. YMMV.

amplifier instead of receiver

The speakers have:
TRS balanced imput
3.5 line jack imput
RCA imput

I thought to buy this RCA amp:
http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B000H2BC4E/ref=s9_simh_gw_g267_i5_r?pf_rd_m=A3JWKAKR8XB7XF&pf_rd_s=desktop-1&pf_rd_r=0KSQ08NX10CGWYZFHBT3&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=862808927&pf_rd_i=desktop

and connect it either in the RCA imput, or to the balanced TRS imput ( I heard that in this way I shouldn`t fry the amp inside the speakers).

With this setup I would also switch the output of the turntable from LINE to PHONO, so :

turntable phono RCA -->amplifier LINE RCA --> plug to TRS balanced in the speakers

Do you think it could work out?

No, this will not work.

You need a pre-amp with "control" (volume, bass, treble, etc.).
