General discussion

turning video into still pictures

Oct 26, 2007 3:36PM PDT

I am looking to buy a camcorder and was wondering if a person can shoot a video and grab still shots off of it? Can this be done with any digital video camera? thanks

Are you asking whether there are camcorders that can shoot stills while shooting video? If so, most have a feature (like my Panasonic) that have a button that you can press while shooting video that "snaps" a digital still image of what you are video taping.

Or are you asking whether you can create a still from video after it's already been shot? If so, then as far as I know, you need to ingest the video into a computer program, like most video editing software programs, that allow you to grab a frame and create a still image that can be printed. Because video is only 72dpi (dots per inch resolution, and when comparing this to high-end printing, print images may be 300dpi and up) the print from a video image grab will be limited in the size you can print and maintain quality. I typically limit my print size from a video grab to a 5X7 or smaller.

camcorder you want, DON'T buy it - but download its manual from the manufacturer's website and make sure it does what you want it to do.

My Sony miniDV based camcorder also has a memory card installed and allows photos to be taken while video is shooting, too (and the resolution of the picture differs if I am in standard definition or high definition video capture mode - or not capturing video and just using the still camera capabilities)... some camcorders may not allow this capability. Once you have downloaded the manual and read through it and determined that the camcorder does what you need it to do, then buy the camera.

As far as "shoot a video and grab still shots off of it", once you transfer video to your computer, it will be up to the video editing application and whether it allows you to grab a frame - or not... This has nothing to do with the camcorder - the video is in the computer.
