Question

Turning off wifi at night!

Jan 20, 2015 8:30AM PST

The wife would like to limit our wifi (RF ) exposure by turning off the wifi function while being able to use our desktop on the internet.

Long story, we have Verizon FIOS with their router tied into our Linksys then into our desktop. The Linksys has no on/off switch, so when I unplug the router, the cable signal does not go through the router and into the desktop.

There must be a way I can have a switched device to be on the internet without the wifi working???

Thanks

Answer
Without full model numbers, no direct answer.

I don't know if your Verizon FIOS is just as a modem or router combo. One could setup the Verizon gear as a WiFi less router and wire to that. Then your second Linksys router configured as a WAP could be on a wall timer.

I believe the FIOS acts as a modem and router and I had to get the Linksys since the MAC laptop needed WAP and did not work off the Verizon router. If that makes any sense?

Not yet.

I've setup some thousand routers and WAPs. I've lost count of second routers that folk used the WAN port (hint, that means it's not a WAP.)

PS. Until I get some model numbers, setup, connections, settings, I'm going to be vague.

I would think disconnecting the antenna...

would limit the distance. At least that my hope or thought.

The router does not have an antenna.
