Resolved Question

Turning my Laptop as wifi router

Mar 2, 2012 2:37PM PST

I realy want my laptop as wifi router so I won't buy anymore a dedicated wifi router. I've watch a clip at youtube that tells you how to make your laptop as wifi router.. But the problem is that my wireless icon and LAN icon should be both working when the set up is done. But this not happened to me. Only the LAN icon is only working. Later on the video, the host said, you must disable wifi and ethernet switching at you BIOS to enable the both icon. My laptop is Toshiba L510, running on Windows XP SP3 32 bit. Here's the link of the video which Cnet.com did.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADpHIeBSFUk

Sorry, what video?

I didn't supply a video. So I am unaware of the issue. HOWEVER I know XP is too finicky and fiddly for today's consumers. I don't know if you can stand it.

I would never use that method.

At 2:30 he tells you there are a lot of settings to change. And he also said "makeshift" as in fiddly and unreliable. I agree.

Answer
Why do you want to do this?

Routers are cheap. Routers also act as firewalls to the internet. If you see the video the guy has a wired connection to the pc that he's using as the router. That PC is susceptible to attacks from the internet since it's connected directly to the internet. The computer's IP address is directly on the internet. A physical router acts as a firewall by hiding the IP address of the devices connected behind it from the internet. The ip address of the router is exposed but their are no file and if you have security someone can't get to your files. The PC that is being used as the virtual router is exposed to the internet.

Just an easy experiment

I'm justifying the video whether the video is true since the video came from a reliable website(Cnet.com).. My concern is, I just want the creators of that video from Cnet.com to prove that a laptop OS of Xp can be used as wifi router. So do you know how..???
