Question

turn slim pc into tower(swap cases)

Mar 30, 2016 10:04PM PDT

im wondering how hard it would be to swap cases from my hp slim 6000 pro (windows 7) to a standed hp tower case. i already have a case and ive seen that im probly gonna either have to get a cpu cooler back bracket or a new cooler with a bracket and also a new psu that fits witch i found on ebay. the main reason for changing the case is the case i have is a slim it only holds 2 hdds and i have 2-250gb sata hdds in already i prefer to have a min. of 3 so i can keep operating system and game files/media and torrent files and have one left for downloading to. i really dont like external hdds even as a e-sata setup so im looking into this option. so has anyone done this before or any advice and will my pci video card line up i have both low profile and full tower brackets.... i can always mod my case as is now but i prefer not to just because welding shity sheet metal is a pain

If the same type of case, shouldn't be a problem.

Have you open it up and take a look?
Mar 30, 2016 11:33PM PDT

I think you would be a better judge as it's worth while doing it. Personally I have seen a few...and I decided to leave them alone. What is it that make you wanted to do this?

Oh, I see 2TB Hdd.
Mar 30, 2016 11:58PM PDT

Going for less than $80. So how much is that PSU on ebay? Are think of this as a gaming computer?

psu and hdd
Mar 31, 2016 10:02AM PDT

i found several psu's that fit on ebay and another site they range from $15-40, im gonna get a bigger harddrive for storage down the road but only for storage, its esier for me to have a seprate harddrive for downling and storage just becuse its easer to isolate viruses and wipe drive, witch ive done and its faster.

Apr 1, 2016 12:25AM PDT

i looked at that card and it seems ok, i found one one walmart site(got discount so always walmart lol) would it be to much to ask for a gt740 http://www.walmart.com/ip/EVGA-GeForce-GT-740-FTW-Video-Card-NVIDIA-Chipset-2GB-GDDR3-Single-Slot-PCI/37667411

or would that be to much for the psu, im new to factory lockout so i have no clue, i built my last pc with a asus mobo the intigrated graphics put my radeon 6450 to shame lol but i dont have to money for a new build ontop of windows activation fee... if i could only swap the motherboard n keep the activation code

Gt 740
Apr 2, 2016 7:03PM PDT

That's a 65/70w card.

In order to make a wag 2 things have to be known.

On the new psu what is the amps on the +12v rail/s?

What cpu are you using?

cpu
Apr 3, 2016 9:37PM PDT

Pentium dual core 3.06ghz cpu

Based on a blurry picture it looks like your new psu is a dual rail unit.

Rail#2 @14 amps feeds the cpu.
Rail#1 @16 amps feeds everything else.

The gt 740 should work.

sounds good

thanks, sounds good, gonna start the swap as soon as the new cpu cooler and psu gets here, ill see how that turns out before ordering the video card and usb 3.0 card

sry, i meant to reply to another question, downfall of only having a phone on work breaks not good lol. i wish i could but im so limited to psu's because of hp proprietary 1-2-3 connections after about 2 weeks of searching i got lucky n realized the hp 8000 elite has the same connections(320w is better than 240w) and haven't found a adapter on market for 20+4 pin atx if i could id simply convert and use a graphics card with a power input id be so much easer

- Collapse -
don't need adapter
Apr 4, 2016 11:06AM PDT

just leave the +4 off and plug in the 20 pin part.

psu adapter
Apr 5, 2016 9:19PM PDT

im trying to say, its not normal atx hp has a factory lockout so i can only use certain psu's that fit it, there are 3 different connections one 6pin one 4pin and one that looks like a power on/control

then get a different standard case
Apr 6, 2016 8:12AM PDT

You can get some quite sufficient for as low as $30 plus shipping. This is ATX type. You may need BTX type.

Here's a standard BTX case, but shipping cost too high.

I build my own, so always go with industry standard parts. Makes parts replacements and upgrades easy. I can go through 3 upgrades or more and never need to change case.

If you have computer shows where vendors come to an arena to show and sell their products, you can get some real bargains too. Here's one organizer that's been around at least 20 years that I know of, been to quite a few of theirs in the Maryland area.
https://www.facebook.com/ComputerShowSale/?fref=ts

Sadly they aren't as big and popular as they used to be when there were a huge number of vendors and great competitive prices available. More like a flea market now.

Here's several state shows advertised.

search online and you can find them for your state too.

It doesn't say what type of motherboard, but the power unit is BTX, so that means the motherboard most likely is too, so any new case would need to be a BTX format. Industry standard format cases are ATX, so not many after market cases made BTX. Typically those are Major Manufacturer cases, they like to keep you locked into them for parts replacements.

"The BTX form factor has not been widely adopted despite its improvements over ATX and related standards. As a result, the availability and variety of BTX-compatible components is limited.

One reason for the failure of BTX to gain traction in key markets was the rise of energy-efficient components (CPUs, chipsets and GPUs) which require less power and produce less waste heat, eliminating two of the primary intended benefits of BTX. Another reason was the lack of OEM adopters.[3]

Initially, only Gateway and Dell offered computers with the new format, later HP and Fujitsu-Siemens (now Fujitsu) also offered some BTX-based computers. However, most other manufacturers stayed with the ATX standard, and even the handful of manufacturers who did adopt BTX for some products continued to produce the bulk of their machines with the ATX form factor."

Personally I'd just sell the BTX and build myself an ATX with new motherboard and case.

BTX? Had one. Moved on.
Apr 6, 2016 9:19AM PDT

I found it to be the most awful choice I ever made for a motherboard. I was jazzed at first over some aspects then as I tried to get this or that, ouch.

I moved on. I suggest you do so as well.

OH, now there might be another issue.
Apr 6, 2016 9:38AM PDT

As far as I have seen, PSU connector are 20+4 now (or maybe there are adapter?). I ran into a similar problem with a Linovo desktop. It was using some smaller connector, I didn't count it but it was not 20/24. This is funny, I start looking into this is because I also wants to add another Hdd. internally. There was space but no connectors and cable splitter adapter is not all that economical.
