I have always wondered...
Feb 10, 2004 11:25AM PST

I have always wondered why school/college sports are taken so extremely seriously here. In Sweden we have local clubs who the kids/teenagers join. But when they are at college level here (18-22 more or less), they're at first team level in Sweden, but in a club like let's say LA Lakers. And of course it is taken seriously at that level but so serious that they almost kill a player. I doubt it! That is really horrible! There are hooligans in Europe, but they tend to kill each other and not the players...
But the schools in Sweden don't have their teams. Why is it that way in the USA? I believe most of the European countries have a system like the Swedish one. I doubt that it is the colleges or universities or schools that provide the youngsters with the soccer skills in England. I am sure that is responsibility of the local clubs.

Hi, Charlie.

My take on the story was that it was unintentional -- that the damage was actually done by fans celebrating his accomplishment, and that it was some sort of freak injury that was entirely unintended.

True Dave...
Feb 10, 2004 1:08PM PST

Hi Dave,

That is very true. But I still wonder why people take it so seriously at a relatively low level of the sport? I mean, it is not the top of it...
Well, here are my doubts again on the way sports work here in comparison to Europe. Why is school/college sports so important here? In Europe things start to get hot when you get up to the maximum level of each sport, but definitly not below that.
And notice, I am not saying either way is better, just wondering why it has developed in so different ways here and in Europe.
