Trying to reinstall 98SE

by Treker / July 31, 2005 5:31 PM PDT

I reformatted 2 30G HD, set one as Master, the other as slave. I tried to install XP on them, but it says it's checking the system config and then does nothing. So I thought I'd install 98SE and then the upgrade to XP Home Edition, which I had before. I got 98 on and then decided to put a fresh XP Prof. on instead. It ran the setup and when I went to open it, nothing was there. Win 98 was, however, but there were 2 OS on the HD even tho XP wouldn't run. I reformatted again and tried to reinstall 98 and it won't reinstall. It gets to the system config part and then does nothing. I keep fdisking it and reformatting, but to no avail. Any suggestions? It's an EPIA mini motherboard, an external floppy, 2 IDE slots, 256 RAM, embedded CPU and that's it.

Just one thing.

Today's hard disks and 80 conductor cables don't use master and slave settings. Try the new standard.

In closing, remove the 2nd drive since less parts means less parts to suspect.

reinstalling Win 98 SE

I knew I could not install XP for my oldest slowest CTX
166 Mhz 64Mgb RAM 15 GB HD that did not come with it new,
but something happened when I tried to install More Ram,
forcing me to reinstall Win 98 SE, seems you still need to keep track of original install disks or have access to
somewhere to get drivers and software. Was frustrating trying to get the revised modeum to work at all. Best of luck if anyone has never even opened the case before.
