Trying to connect hard drive in an enclosure

Nov 6, 2009 10:10AM PST

I'm trying to connect a WD 500GB hard drive to my laptop so i can create a disk image of the current hard drive and then switch them out. I'm running Windows Vista with all the updates on my laptop.

The external is a WD 500GB SATA hard drive and I have it in a mobile SATA HDD enclosure.

When I plugged it in for the first time, windows installed the drivers and everything looked fine, but it won't assign it a drive letter #. I can uninstall it as an external USB storage device. When I go to the system icon in the control panel it is displayed correctly as a HDD.

Does anyone know why windows won't assign a drive letter to it?

Thanks.

Let's say that you want to do what you wrote?

Then there is no need to assign a drive letter yet. Go get CLONEZILLA and clone that drive. Done.

(NT) Is it partitioned and formatted?
