Question

Trying to clone Windows from my HDD to my SSD

May 26, 2019 7:56PM PDT

Im trying to clone my OS from my Hard drive to my M.2 SSD using AOMEI Backupper. But when i click Clone->System Clone then click on my ssd it says i need to have a partition size of 894.33 GB, i dont understand why i would need to have almost a TB of size just for my OS to clone.

Answer
Usually that's the size of data on the source drive.

Have you checked the Sector by sector clone?

Sector by sector clone is created to clone all sectors no matter it is used or not when using AOMEI Backupper Professional. However, you can use it to recover formatted or deleted data on the old drive.

The aomei clone util has an option to clone just the OS not the entire disk.

At least the linux flavor of that util does.

Clone OS

The cloning OS means cloning the entire OS partition, to another SSD drive. Not only the operating system. So your destination SSD must be larger than the whole OS partition, usually the C partition. But you can use AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard, which supports only copying used space of the OS partition to the destination disk, then you can use a smaller SSD.

Another Solution

You can use Partition Wizard to resize the partition of the old drive. If for instance you are only using 60 GB of your 1TB drive you can shrink it down to that size and then clone to the new SSD.
