Trying to buy Acer Product. It's REALLY Hard!

Aug 11, 2004 7:13AM PDT

I'm trying to buy Acer Travelmate 8006 Lmi.
I liked it after reading the reviews, and other people's response on the web. So I researched little more on the product. Two things I did not like about the product.

1. The Hard Drive. It comes with 80gb hard drive. I found out that the speed on it is 4200rpm.
2. It comes with Windows XP Pro. I already have it, and plus, I need to install it in some other language other than English.

I wanted to change the hard drive to 7200 rpm for 60gb, and do not want Windows XP Pro, so I can reduce the cost of the laptop.

So, I've contacted Acer Sales Department. Their response is to contact one of the authorized resellers or on-line partners. I'm contacting everywhere. Their response is that they cannot change anything about it and I should contact Acer.

So, I'm going nowhere with this and I need to purchase the product soon enough before I go to college.

I can customize dell, compaq products easily on the web and I can order it almost anywhere. If it's this hard to just change few things about the product, now I'm worried. What kind of customer service and after service will I get after I purchase the item?

If anyone has suggestions on where I might be able to get the item customized, or any other suggestions for the equivalent notebook, I would really appreciate.

Sony, Acer and Toshiba are pretty much a "boxed" item that comes in a boat with thousands of the same boxes.

Dell and HP/Compaq to competing in the customizind market space.

You are catching on quick.

Bob is exactly right about Acer and Sony They offer prebuilts only pretty much as well as Fujitsu

Toshiba, however, does have custom ordering just as HP/Compaq and dell have and any Toshiba custom order is 10% off online right now Check out the M35 model (M30 custom) It will meet all the requirements the Acer has except it has 64mb video maximum .. unless you are an extreme gamer 64mb dedicated video is still very good. The Dell 8600 also has the 7200 hard drive option and the 128mb dedicated video option if you must have both of those up front but that model is 6.9 pounds, the Toshiba M35 is 6.2 pounds and the Compaq X1000/HPZT3000 (5400 option and 64mb video option) is 6.5 pounds.

The HP/Compaq has 3 LCD resolution options and that is extremely important to some people but Toshiba has Trubrite on XGA only

Why Toshiba can do custom.

The big clue is their recent tie-in with UPS. They solved the shipping issues from there to here for their service work. The repair times dropped from weeks to days. With that new UPS connection, I bet they use that to do custom orders.
