I have a aging Micron Millenia desktop with Athlon Processor, 1.20GHz, 256RAM running XP Home. I have a 40G harddrive (this baby is 5 years old) and a 180 Western Digital external hard drive. During the past year, my USB ports have given me trouble and eventually they, as well as my mouse/keyboard ports all died, so last week I installed an extension card adding 4 USB ports. It seems to work fine even though I had to use a pliers to rip off the metal ledge on the card because my pc is so old, the newer USBs cards all have this L-shaped metal bend that doesn't fit in my pc. Once that piece was out of the way, it clicked in great and purrs.
So, now I'm having trouble getting the Micron to recognize either of my external hard drives. (I also have a Maxtor which is 80G.) My biggest problem is space on the hard drive and with the pc refusing to recognize these, regardless of which USB they're hooked through (these USB's I've tested with cameras, mouse, keyboard, and iRiver player- so I know they work).
Could I have blown the hard drives up by disconnecting them inappropriately from the pc ? I was reviewing documentation (after I reinstalled the drivers/software to try to get the things to work) and it said something about ejecting ... I am suspicious that I blew these things up and I don't know how to know if I did. I don't have another pc to test the ex-harddrives with.
