The setup you appear to be using will likely not work because the router is not setup to be the distributor of IP addresses. I would contact the ISP and get a modem that provides an ethernet port as well as a USB connection. Then the setup would be:
Modem(via ethernet cable)...Router(via ethernet cable)...PCs
I'm in the Army in Germany with my roommate.
I have set up a LAN with 2 computers using a broadband ethernet router.
The OS on Computer#1 is WIN XP(Home Ed. SP2) and is the server; a workgroup has been established on this computer and Computer#2, running WIN 98, is recognized within the workgroup.
Both computers are 2m or 6ft from each other.
I have a 1 USB ADSL modem that connects to a phone line for the internet.
Both computers have software from the local telephone co. on them to enable them to gain access to the internet.
I have tried unsuccessfully to gain internet access using Computer#2 with WIN 98 OS on the network. I do not know how to see if I am connected to Computer#1. It is easy to tell with WIN XP.
The only way I currently access the internet on either computer is by disconnecting and connecting back and forth the USB modem and then dialing up.
I only have 400MB of hard drive space on Computer#2 and do not want to install XP on it.
GOAL: to have simultaneous access to the internet on both computers using the Computer#1 as a gateway.
Thanks for any help
