I have been getting this message for maybe a year now. I just click it closed. Is this something I should "fix"? After closing the error window, it never shuts down, so I continue using the computer.

Does MSN Internet Access.lnk = C:\Program Files\MSNIA\TRAYCLNT.EXE look familiar?

You could try MSCONFIG and disable that entry to see if you can do without.

No, it doesn't look familiar. What is it and what does it do? Is it something I do not need?

My post contained words that give you clues what it does. And you can turn it off for a test with MSCONFIG to test the effect.

But I already noted that. What stops you from doing the test?

Bob, what stops me is.......I am not sure of what I am doing.

Here's how to test it.

With the OS you mentioned, Press Start, Run and type in ...

MSCONFIG

Find Trayclnt (sorry if I typo that) and disable it. Ok your way out and reboot to test.

Bob, I did as you suggested. I found trayclnt and it was NOT enabled. I guess if the error message pops ups again, I will just keep x'ing.

Thanks,

Sheila,

TRAYCLNT.exe is a "problem child" that occurs after installing MSN internet connection software such as MSN 8,9, etc. Sometimes uninstalling or reinstalling MSN will fix the issue.

Click on the link below, then scroll to the "TRAYCLNT" listing and read about the problems and possible troubleshooting options:

TASK LIST PROGRAMS ? T

A quote from that link backs up what Bob has suggested above:

"System Tray icon for MSN subscribers which gives users a quick way to connect to MSN. Microsoft produce wonderful software sometimes, but when are they ever going to get their act together with MSN ? From the resources crusher LOADQM to the often hanging, not responding, illegal operation culprit TRAYCLNT, MSN beggars belief and frustrates too many users.

Recommendation :
Many users will at some stage or other experience problems with TRAYCLNT. Sometimes re-installing MSN cures the problem, at other times extracting the MAILCOM.DLL file with the System File Checker or MSCONFIG also does the trick. "

Bob & Grif, Thanks for responding. I looked at the links you sent. One of the bits of info suggested that using the icon in the system tray causes the error. I wonder if that method also created some of the other problems that I have encountered?

I sometimes get disconnected after about 1 minute. That is very annoying!! I contacted the online tech help from Microsoft and while I was "talking" to him/her, I was disconnected.

I will have to work on these problems with the answers you gave me. I thought that after 4 years with a computer, I would not be a 'newbie' anymore, but I find that is not true.

Thanks again......Oh I forgot earlier to list my operating system...Sorry.

Now, be nce everyone...

I see a few issues and I know not everyone will like my reply.

1. Running IE 5.5.

When Microsoft suffered a code leak a few months ago, the malware writers opened it up and found a glaring fault in all IE web browsers 5.5 and prior. Microsoft's response was to end IE 5.5 and earlier versions and only patch up 6.0 for the example EXPLOIT.

Some may scream about it, but if you complain to me that IE 5.5 machines have issues, then I point to this issue and write "Yup!"

2. The machine has 64 MB RAM.

While it was fine when you got it, today it's about 1/2 what may be needed. Here's why. The web browser, antivirus and such has grown in size and I'm about 99% sure that you have a WINMODEM. A WinModem relies on the CPU to do the work of keeping you online. With a low memory machine, complaints will occur about droppign offline. "Yup!"

3. NAV.

Some think that NAV is enough to protect them from what bad things there are. My answer is "Nope!"

Read http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/ to learn what other dangers are out there. These PESTS also cause some of the issues you write about.

Hope this helps,

Whoooeee Bob!!!! I may be blonde, but I think you are suggesting that I upgrade. Now, if I were to do that, more questions come to mind. Do I get a whole new system? Do I just upgrade to IE 6.0? How do I get more Ram? Do I need something more than Norton Anti-Virus? You mentioned WINMODEM...What is that?

Can't fool anyone today.
Jul 15, 2004 7:28AM PDT

In summary, I really meant.

1. Can't stay with IE 5.5 or prior. Gotta move or try something like Firefox when you can.

2. Get a 64 Megabyte stick of RAM and put it in.

3. NAV isn't enough. The link explains why and what tools we use.

No need to do much else.
